Get a price from Netherlands
The three modes are quoted separately — they are priced on different things entirely: a container, a cubic metre and a kilo.
Indicative pricing
Starting points for sea freight into the UK, not port-specific figures — the rate for your shipment depends on the loading port, the sailing and the commodity. UK customs duty and import VAT are charged on arrival and are not included, and neither are origin-side charges in Netherlands.
| Service | From | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| FCL — 20ft General Purpose | £950.00 | per 20ft container |
| FCL — 40ft General Purpose | £1,400.00 | per 40ft container |
| LCL groupage | £55.00 | per cubic metre |
| Air freight | Please check with our team | per 100kg chargeable weight |
These are starting prices for the freight, not shipment totals. A groupage rate is what one cubic metre of cargo costs, so a 10 cubic metre consignment costs roughly ten times the figure shown. Figures are indicative, in GBP, and cover cover the sea freight into the UK only — UK customs duty and import VAT are charged on arrival and are not included, and neither are origin-side charges. Your firm quote depends on the exact route, the cargo and the sailing.
What can you import from Netherlands?
Cargo moving on this lane into the UK is typically:
- Machinery and equipment
- Chemicals and plastics
- Packaged foods and beverages
- Consumer goods and retail stock
- Palletised general cargo
Anything palletised, crated or containerised moves on this lane as standard, and the list above is not a limit — it is what we see most of. Cargo needs to be palletised, shrink-wrapped and labelled with the consignee, and anything containing lithium batteries, aerosols, paints, solvents or compressed gas has to be declared at booking.
What export tax and duty applies in Netherlands?
Most countries do not charge duty on goods leaving, and where a levy or surcharge does apply it is normally the supplier's cost and already inside the price you have been quoted. We confirm the position in Netherlands for your commodity at quote stage rather than estimating it.
What matters far more to your landed cost is the invoice itself. UK duty is calculated from the transaction value on the supplier's commercial invoice, so an invoice that understates the goods to save something at the origin becomes your problem at the UK border — and an undervalued entry is your liability as the importer, not the seller's.
What are the export restrictions in Netherlands?
Restrictions on this lane are almost all pre-shipment. A permit that had to be issued before the goods left cannot be obtained once they have arrived, and cargo sitting at a UK terminal while somebody tries is cargo accruing storage and demurrage. These are the ones that most often catch a first shipment:
What documents do you need to export from Netherlands?
This set comes from your supplier, not from you. We cannot obtain it on their behalf — an export declaration is filed by the exporting business in its own country — so the practical move is to send this list to them before the first order rather than chasing it once the vessel has sailed.
What documents do you need in the UK to import?
A second, separate set — and this one is yours. We make the declaration and handle the entry, but the EORI and the commercial detail behind it have to come from you, and a shipment addressed to an importer who does not hold one cannot be cleared by anybody.
What UK import tax and duty will you pay?
Two separate charges land on a UK import, and they are calculated differently. Customs duty comes first, set by the commodity code of the goods under the UK Global Tariff and charged on the customs value — the price paid, plus freight and insurance to the UK border. Import VAT is then charged at the standard 20% rate on that total including the duty, so VAT is paid on the duty as well as on the goods.
Duty is the figure worth checking before you commit to a price, because it varies enormously by commodity and there is no useful average. Many manufactured goods land between 0% and 12%; textiles and footwear sit higher; some categories are duty free. Send us the commodity codes with your enquiry and we will confirm the rate that applies rather than quoting you a range.
Where a trade agreement covers the goods, a valid proof of preferential origin can reduce the duty to zero. It has to be issued correctly and held at the time of import — a claim made later, without the paperwork, is not accepted, and the duty already paid is not refunded.
Import VAT is usually the larger number and usually the one that alarms a first-time importer, but for a VAT-registered business it is not a cost. Postponed VAT accounting lets you declare and recover it on the same return rather than paying it at the border and waiting to reclaim it, which removes the cash-flow hit entirely. We set this up on your declarations as standard unless you tell us otherwise.
Duty rates, licence requirements and documentation change, and the position depends on the commodity code of your specific goods. Everything here is general guidance rather than a customs ruling — we confirm what applies to your shipment at quote stage, before you commit to anything.
Netherlands to the UK shipping: FAQs
How long does shipping from Netherlands to the UK take?
Sea freight runs about 3–6 days port to port, and air freight 1–1 days airport to airport. Rotterdam is the quickest sea gateway on this lane at around 3 days. Add time at both ends for collection from your supplier and for UK customs clearance and delivery — the port-to-port figure is the sea leg only.
Which ports do you ship from in Netherlands?
We move cargo through one port in Netherlands: Rotterdam (NLRTM). Full container load runs from Rotterdam. Groupage runs from Rotterdam.
What UK duty and VAT will I pay importing from Netherlands?
Customs duty is set by the commodity code of the goods under the UK Global Tariff and charged on the customs value — the price paid plus freight and insurance to the UK border. Import VAT is then charged at the standard 20% rate on that total including the duty. Duty varies too much by commodity for an average to be useful, so send the commodity codes with your enquiry and we will confirm the rate. If you are VAT registered, postponed VAT accounting lets you declare and recover the VAT on the same return rather than paying it at the border.
Can you deliver to my door in the UK?
Yes, anywhere in the UK. Groupage can also be collected by you from whichever of our consolidation warehouses the container is stripped at — Belfast, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Essex, Glasgow, Manchester or Newcastle — which is usually cheaper than a delivery leg if you are near one and can send a van.
What should I know before importing from Netherlands?
Because the crossing is so short, documentation is the critical path rather than the sailing. Paperwork ready before the vessel departs is what preserves the speed advantage of this lane. Get a GB EORI number before the first booking rather than during it — it is free from HMRC and takes a few working days, and no import declaration can be made without one.
